Reading(Creativity)

Description and Goals

I want to make sure that I do not just stay physically active and healthy. I also want to make sure that I am improving my thinking and perspective and I can do that by reading a few books during this quarantine. This will help me develop my creativity and allow me to stay mentally active and not waste the time. Additionally, I will be making a plan of certain books I wish to read and why I chose them to make sure, I gain knowledge I can use from the reading I will be doing. Further on, i will make sure that I continuously challenge myself with new books in certain topics I had a prejudice against and make sure I actually finish the book instead of starting it and not finishing it. Finally, I will be joining an online international book club where I will be involved in conversations about books and be part of interesting discussions regarding these topics. To assess my progress throughout, I will aim to read 2 books in the next 2 weeks and write a brief description of them.

I have started reading the book called "How come?"  which is generally not the kind of book I would read. It is non-fiction and it revolves around finding scientific explanations of things in nature and things that happen in our every day lives. I have read 30 pages so far and I have learned a lot about things I thought I'd never be interested in. Despite the process being boring at times, the knowledge i got made it worth it. Additionally, when i started losing motivation, i took 30 mins breaks to make sure my mind was open to new information. Further on, I got in contact with one of the people in the international group for book reading and contacted him regarding the book so far. By the next reflection, I would like to have a larger attention span and ensure that I can sit down more than 45 minutes and read more productively. I plan to read an hour a day and discuss it for 30 minutes on the global group. Further on, I want to allocate time everyday to make sure I do not procrastinate. I feel like an appropriate time would be within the hour I wake up in. I will investigate if this works and based off of that change/keep the time allocated for reading. Furthermore, I will be discussing the books with my peers from the international group and these discussions will lead to more knowledge being transferred and the process being more meaningful to everyone involved. The collaboration between people globally for knowledge is very exciting and motivational for me which will help me stay motivated on this journey.

I have finally finished the book "How come?". Essentially, the book can be summarized by stating that it explores complex scientific topics and discussions that come in the form of a normal everyday wonder however, it is written in a way to encourage young readers to explore these topics later. Personally, I felt the urge to look further into some of the science behind the questions. I realised that it wasn't easy and it was challenging to keep up with all the terminology sometimes. However, I looked up words I couldn't understand to ensure, I had a more complete idea of what's being said. I started researching these words. What was unfamiliar in this situation was the kind of book (genre) which was very unusual for me. I communicated my opinions about the book to the international book club and a couple of them wanted to give the book a try. One person said that they read the book before and we had a discussion about religion and the ideas presented in the book. The difference in both our cultures gave me a new perspective on life.
